The
Kenai Peninsula is the heart of Alaska's Sport-Fishing activity and Ninilchik
is at the center of this sportsman's paradise. Sportsmen from around
the world visit the peninsula to fish its world'class rivers: the Kenai,
Deep Creek, the Russian, the Anchor and the Ninilchik Rivers.
Two of these rivers run through Ninilchik: The Ninilchik and Deep Creek. These rivers produce all five species of Pacific Salmon in abundance. Just a beautiful twenty-five minute drive west you can bank-fish the Anchor River and just thirty-five minutes east is the powerful and famous Kenai River. The Kenai River is home to the worlds' largest King Salmon with the current sport-fishing record of 97lbs. 8oz. Large numbers of these giant Kings, ranging above 70lbs., are caught only in one place other than the Kenai River and that place is in Ninilchik just off the beach near the mouth of Deep Creek where it flows into the Pacific Ocean via Cook Inlet. The Deep Creek fishery is blessed by "Nature" making it one of the three "Five Star Fishing Holes" in Alaska. For some unknown reason salmon from each "Run" of fish entering the Cook Inlet drainage or river system visit the mouth of Deep Creek River, perhaps to acclimatize themselves to fresh water before searching out their rivers of origin and then their swim up stream to spawn.

WILDLIFE OBSERVATION The Ninilchik area is a photographer’s paradise. Be ready to photograph sea otters, whales, porpoises and a variety of sea birds. It’s not uncommon to see eagles swoop down to catch a fish or tend their nesting eaglets. Black bear, brown bear, wolfs and moose also frequent the area. Caribou are most often seen near the Kenai River. |
